Domestic Groove: CHE CUPUMANIK

DOMESTIC GROOVE ~ Celeb’s Chosen Seven is my biweekly column in The Beat (Jakarta) mag. Basically it’s an interview via e-mail which focuses on small, intimate, domestic stuff; what Indonesia’s public figures are really into, musically speaking.

For the 23rd edition I went upclose-and-personal with Che Cupumanik.

CHE CUPUMANIK
Singer, Songwriter, Writer

What music are you into at the moment?
I’m doing a side project right now, with a band called Konspirasi. We just completed the mastering process for our new album. So, I’m all about listening to 10 songs from the album right now. But other songs that I’m also into at the moment are: “Black Gives Way to Blue” by Alice In Chains, “Preaching The End Of The World” by Chris Cornell, “Girl” by The Beatles and “Piste 9″ by Feist

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it?
Nirvana’s Nevermind. When I saw their video clip on MTV, it had such a great influence that prompted me to immediately have their album. And indeed, after getting Nevermind, Guns ‘N Roses instantly were not cool anymore.

What is your all-time favorite album? Why?
Ten by Pearl Jam. All the albums that I like, represent my musical tastes. And Ten is not just about taste, this album represents my personality.

What was the worst record you ever purchased?
I have all Iwan Fals albums, but after bought his 50:50 album, dare me to say it, I think Iwan Fals should give way to the new generation.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?
I don’t want to be anybody else. I want to continue being my own self, but with the radical intellectual thoughts of Ali Syari’ati.

What album do you choose to start your weekend?
Bullhead by The Melvins, I am always excited to start the weekend with this album.

And album you choose to end your weekend?
Euphoria Morning by Chris Cornell, this album always give me a sense of reflections that perfects my weekend.

Quite the busy man these days, Che and the band he’s leading, Cupumanik, recently released a new single titled “Luka Bernegara”, with a video clip that will soon be released. His other project, the all-stars band, Konspirasi, are also set to release a full-length album in October 2011. Meanwhile Che is also in the middle of writing a book about his documentation, perspective and personal opinion on the Indonesian Grunge scene.
