Domestic Groove: REBECCA REIJMAN

Singer, Songwriter, Music Curator, Model

What music (album/s or song/s) are you into at the moment?
At this moment I’m into the Turn Blue album, by the Black Keys. What a great album. And for some reason I’ve been listening non stop to Florence + the Machine’s MTV unplugged album (released 2012) in 2015.

And I think Cypress Hill’s Black Sunday album should also be on this list.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it?
Ah! This is such a cherishing moment for me. I remember it like it was yesterday: I was about 13 years old and still living in my hometown The Hague. It was my very first visit to the ‘new’ Virgin music store in the Schoolstraat, if I’m not mistaken.

A huge building full with great music, people digging in the discount & sale sections for their favorites AND you could listen to albums of upcoming artists, for free! Being a little 13-year old music fanatic: this store really blew my mind.

It’s where I fell in love with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album. Dude. Her album just completely took over my body, my mind, it made me see the ‘bigger picture’ & ‘my purpose in life’. WTF? I was only 13, but somehow, this album touched me deeply. Ngeriii. I was standing there for almost 2 hours, just ‘free’ listening & goose-bumping. Then I visited Virgin every day, after school, for at least 2/3 weeks just to listen to her album until I finally asked my dad to buy it for me.
What, other than your own, are your all-time favorite albums? Why?
Definitely all Lauryn Hill’s albums: Life changing & so inspirational
D’ Angelo – Brown Sugar: Great production, Super sexy music
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble – Live at Carnegie Hall: Amazing & epic
La Rouge Volume 8 Hosse Hosse: What can I say? It’s my Sranang roots, this album grew my love for Surinamese Kaskawi Kaskawina music.

What was the worst record you ever purchased?
Hmm. That’s harsh to really say ‘the worst record’, I mean, I really love so many genres & appreciate all kinds of music. But if I’d had to choose it would be my Rammstein album.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?
Aduh. Tough question. But I would probably choose any president that started unnecessary wars based on false flag propaganda (let’s say George W. Bush) and created more chaos than peace, the mass murdering of innocent civilians and leading to the world troubles we face today in 2015. And probably try to reverse his actions. (Too serious yeah? Haha. Well, you asked.)

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)?
To be honest I don’t have time to read books anymore. Having a 2-year old and a 6-month old baby keeps me pretty occupied.

But the last book I read was about 7 months ago, a Dutch book titled Toen ik je zag* by Isa Hoes. A true story about this amazing talented actors/theater couple, who met each other on set, their life as famous Dutch actors and their marriage. Isa writes about her husband Antonie Kamerling, who suffers from a depression and ended up taking his own life in 2010. Leaving behind his two young children and Isa. A touching story. Score: 8
*When I saw you
What new movie should people see? Why?
Mad Max or Jurassic World. Pretty cool stories, cool effects. These are also the only new movies I have seen, haha. And actually, I only went to the theaters lately just to eat the hot dogs & popcorn. What can I say, I just love the cinema hot dogs hehe.

What music do you choose to start your weekend?
The Very Best of Curtis Mayfield – “Pusherman”. I mean, what a song! Great, soulful, funky & I love it! Not too loud, so enjoyable. Really great song to start my weekend with.

Disclosure ft. Gregory Porter – “Holding On”. Great house production, no commercial EDM shitty Afrojack music, classy & just good. Gives me a good feeling when I’m getting ready to go out or dance with my little boys, perfect.

M.I.A – “Bucky Done Gone” (Jamie Jones Remix). Insane house song. Really pumpin’. Perfect for heading to a party & partaaay!

And music you choose to end your weekend?
Osunlade – “Blackman”. Just love the song, vibe & tempo. Not too fast, perfect to end my weekend.
Lenny Kravitz – “New York City”. Great song by Lenny and I just love the music video!

Rebecca is at the moment pretty busy with her 2 sons, eldest is 2 years. Youngest is 6 months. Got her hands full with those boys, but she manage to be the music curator & spokesperson for Bali Unite Festival: “Been working with Bali Unite for 8 months now, great experience!”

She’s currently working on her mini album; will probably start recording mid August. After releasing two albums here in Indonesia, last one was in 2010 and appeared as a model for 80 magazine covers, she’s ready to explore her artistic needs & wants—ready to Rock ‘n roll!
