Domestic Groove: MIRA LESMANA

DOMESTIC GROOVE ~ Celeb’s Chosen Nine is my biweekly column in The Beat (Jakarta) mag. Basically it’s an interview via e-mail which focuses on small, intimate, domestic stuff; what Indonesia’s public figures are really into.

For the 27th edition I went upclose-and-personal with Mira Lesmana.

What music are you into at the moment?
LLW’s (Indra Lesmana, Barry Likumahuwa, Sandy Winarta) Love, Life, Wisdom—cool jazz! And Kasabian’s Velociraptor!—still cosmic and psychedelic.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it?
The Police’s Reggatta de Blanc A& U2′s War. Can’t remember which one was bought first, but basically a teenage crush on Sting and Bono, and then to Brit Music.

What are your all-time favorite albums? Why?
OMG! I have so many! To name but a few:
Fiona Apple’s When the Pawn: excellent music & vocal. Dark, vicious, yet deadly romantic and deep.
The Dandy Warhols’ Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia: makes me feel Bohemian!
The Million Dollar Hotel: Music from the Motion Picture, featuring U2 and The Million Dollar Hotel Band: not many people like this album, but i think it’s inventive & gives me that floating, flying feeling.
The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band: what can I say?
And many many more!

What was the worst record you ever purchased?
Ummm… none! My collection is pretty cool haha…

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?
A better version of me! (By the way, this is one of the titles of a Fiona Apple songs)

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Borrow or buy?
“The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” by Yasutaka TsuTsui. Can’t rate it yet, not finished.

What new movie should people see? Why?
Not many good movies around lately.AMaybe “PJ 20″ by Cameron Crowe because it’s always nice to watch a journey of a band in a feature documentary like this one of Pearl Jam.

What song do you choose to start your weekend?
‘”Moondance” by Van Morrison.

And song you choose to end your weekend?
“Stretch N Pause” by LLW.

Mira is currently working on a few projects such as preparing her next feature film “Bumi Manusia”, based on the literature/novel by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, writing a new musical stage show (title still concealed!), the possibility of shooting a small production of feature film in Timor, also the possibilty of showing Musikal Laskar Pelangi in other cities of Indonesia and Malaysia.
